Frequently Asked Questions
In rhinoplasty for men, must an implant be used?
No. SM Plastic Surgery also performs implant-free rhinoplasty, using autologous tissue for a more natural result.
Can rhinoplasty and functional nasal surgery be done at the same time?
Yes — at SM Plastic Surgery, functional problems such as deviated septum, nasal valve stenosis, sinusitis and rhinitis are addressed at the same time as appearance.
After rhinoplasty, when can glasses be worn?
Light glasses can be worn from 4–6 weeks after surgery.
Is revision rhinoplasty available?
Yes — revision with PRP, revision using autologous rib cartilage and more. Through accurate assessment, problems of many kinds are addressed and the nose line is finished in harmony with the face.
How does rhinoplasty for men differ from rhinoplasty for women?
In men the bone structure of the nose, the thickness of the skin and the proportion the nose takes up in the face are different, so the line that suits them differs even at the same height. Rhinoplasty for men at SM Plastic Surgery is planned one to one around a straighter bridge line rather than a curved one. How well it suits you varies with your facial shape.
My bridge is low and flat. How is a man's nose raised?
Surgery for a low bridge divides into methods that use an implant and implant-free methods that use your own tissue instead of an artificial implant. Which one is suitable depends on the thickness of your skin, the bone structure of the nose and the line you want, so it is decided after examination before surgery.
I have a dorsal hump that makes me look severe. Can it be corrected?
Surgery for a dorsal hump smooths the projecting curve of the bridge so that a strong, stubborn impression is softened. It is planned by looking at the direction of the tip and the height of the bridge together, and the degree of change varies with the bone structure and skin condition of the nose.
My nose is crooked. Can rhinoplasty for men straighten it?
With a deviated nose the structure inside the nose is often bent as well, not only the outward appearance. At SM Plastic Surgery we check and correct the deviation of the outside and the inside together, and if functional problems such as congestion are present, functional surgery can be carried out at the same time.
My tip is thick and bulbous. Can it be improved?
Surgery for a bulbous tip trims the splayed tip cartilage and thick soft tissue so that the tip becomes slimmer. If the nostrils are wide as well, alar reduction is considered at the same time, and the degree of improvement varies with the thickness of the skin.
Can a short or upturned nose also be corrected in rhinoplasty for men?
Surgery for a short or upturned nose lengthens the nose and adjusts the angle of a tip that points upward. A supporting structure often has to be built inside the nose as well, so the method is decided after the state of the cartilage is checked at the pre-operative examination.
What anaesthesia is used for rhinoplasty for men, and how long does it take?
Rhinoplasty for men is performed under sedation anaesthesia and takes about one to two hours. Sedation is administered by Director Lee Muyoung himself. The time and the type of anaesthesia may change with the range of procedures done together and with your general health, so this is explained at the consultation.
I work full time. How many days should I take off?
Most people return to daily life around seven days after surgery. Stitches are removed at one week as a rule, sometimes as early as day five and sometimes as late as two weeks. How quickly the swelling goes down varies from person to person, so please tell us at the consultation if you have an important date coming up.
How many visits to the clinic are needed after surgery?
You come in two to three times for dressing changes and follow-up, and no hospital stay is required. The schedule may be adjusted according to how recovery is going, and if anything feels wrong in the meantime you can come in for a check even if it is not a scheduled day.
When can I start exercising after surgery?
Recovery speed differs from person to person, so we cannot give a single starting point that applies to everyone. Begin with light activity, and increase exercise that puts pressure on the nose or risks a knock only step by step once your progress has been checked. We advise on the timing at your follow-up visit.
What is checked during the consultation?
We look at the bone structure of the nose, the thickness of the skin and facial proportions, and check whether functional problems such as congestion are also present. Director Lee Muyoung examines you himself and explains which of the case-by-case methods fits, from 3D nasolabial angle rhinoplasty and functional rhinoplasty to implant-free rhinoplasty and surgery for a dorsal hump, deviated nose or bulbous tip.
