Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty at SM Plastic Surgery is a 1:1 tailored design that considers the harmony of the whole face. Dr. Lee Muyoung consults and operates in person.
Nose, In short?
Rhinoplasty refines the shape and function of the nose, and the method varies with the type of nose — low, hump, long, short, crooked or bulbous. SM Plastic Surgery analyses the state of the nasal bone and cartilage through detailed pre-operative assessment and applies the method suited to the type; from a first rhinoplasty through revision and functional rhinoplasty, Dr. Lee Muyoung handles consultation through surgery in person.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does design rhinoplasty differ from standard rhinoplasty?
Design rhinoplasty is not simply about raising the bridge. Considering nose length, tip angle, nasolabial angle and harmony with face shape, we design a natural and balanced nose line for each person.
Is there one ideal nose shape?
An ideal nose is not a trendy one but the shape that suits each person's face and features. SM Plastic Surgery proposes a natural design based on individual proportion analysis.
What is analyzed during the consultation?
Not only the height and shape of the nose, but nose length, nasal tip angle, nasolabial angle, alar width, balance between the eyes and nose, and overall facial balance are analyzed together to build the surgical plan.
Can I choose between a striking nose and a natural one?
Yes. Taking both the image you want and your current facial proportions into account, we can design anything from a natural style to a more defined impression. We do recommend staying within a range that harmonizes with your face.
When can I see the results of design rhinoplasty?
Changes are visible right after surgery, but it takes time for the swelling to fully subside and the line to settle naturally. Major swelling eases within 2–4 weeks, and the final result stabilizes over about 3–6 months.
What materials are used in rhinoplasty?
Silicone, Gore-Tex and autologous cartilage (septal, ear, rib) are among the materials used. We suggest the material that suits, according to the state of the nose and the result you want.
I worry the nose will look unnatural after rhinoplasty
SM Plastic Surgery puts natural change first. With a design that considers the proportions of the whole face, we aim for a result so natural it does not announce itself.
How long does recovery from rhinoplasty take?
Swelling and bruising mostly subside within 1–2 weeks, and it takes about 3–6 months for the line to settle naturally.
Is an implant or my own cartilage the better choice for rhinoplasty?
Neither option is always better. The bridge is often raised with an implant such as silicone or Gore-Tex, while the tip is shaped with autologous cartilage such as septal, ear, or rib cartilage. Because the choice depends on skin thickness, the condition of the nasal tissue, and any previous surgery, we advise you after examining your nose at the consultation.
Can a nose that looks crooked be straightened with surgery?
A crooked appearance can come from the nasal bone, the septal cartilage, or the soft tissue, and the cause differs from person to person. At SM Plastic Surgery, the pre-operative examination checks the size, shape, and degree of deviation of the nasal bone and septal cartilage before the extent of correction is decided. How much improvement is possible varies with each person's tissue condition.
How long does swelling last after nose surgery?
Most of the swelling and bruising subsides within one to two weeks. It takes about three to six months for the nasal line to settle, and slight swelling can remain during that period. Because this varies with the extent of surgery and individual healing, we guide you while following your progress.
What makes the cost of rhinoplasty differ from person to person?
The cost depends on the extent of correction, the materials used, and whether there has been previous surgery. At SM Plastic Surgery, we review your nose at an in-person consultation and then explain the surgical plan together with the cost. An exact figure is difficult to give without examining the nose directly.
Is the surgery different for a low bridge and for a bulbous nose?
The area being corrected is different. A low bridge is addressed mainly by adding height, while a bulbous nose is assessed by looking at the shape of the tip cartilage together with the width of the alae. The two often occur together, so we analyse the height, length, and width of the nose before deciding on the method.
Can the bridge, the tip, and the alae all be corrected in one operation?
They are often corrected together in a single operation. At SM Plastic Surgery the design considers the length of the nose, the angle of the tip, the nasolabial-angle ratio, the width of the alae, and the balance with the face. How much can be done at once depends on the condition of your nose, so we explain this at the consultation.
From what age can rhinoplasty be performed?
It is generally performed after the nasal bone and cartilage have finished growing. Because that point differs from person to person, we do not decide by age alone but check the skeletal condition during the examination. Minors are asked to come with a guardian for the consultation.
Does the same doctor handle both the consultation and the surgery?
At SM Plastic Surgery, Dr. Lee Muyoung handles everything from the consultation through to the operation himself. This keeps the assessment and the design made during the consultation continuous with the surgery itself. After surgery, progress is reviewed through follow-up care consultations.
How long do I need to stay at the clinic on the day of rhinoplasty?
The surgery itself varies with the extent of correction: about one to two hours for surgery tailored to the nose type, and about thirty minutes for alar reduction alone. Time for anesthesia preparation and for resting in the recovery room is added to that. Rhinoplasty is in most cases done without an inpatient stay, and patients go home the same day.
When can I wash my face and wear make-up after nose surgery?
Right after surgery the nose should be kept dry, and washing and make-up around the nose usually begin once the splint and stitches have been removed. Stitch removal is based on about one week, as early as five days and as late as two weeks. Healing speed varies, so we confirm the exact timing while checking your progress.
How many follow-up visits are needed after rhinoplasty?
Two to three visits are usual, for stitch and splint removal and to check how healing is going. Rhinoplasty is in most cases carried out without an inpatient stay. The number of visits can change with your recovery, and the schedule is given after surgery.
When can I exercise or drink alcohol after nose surgery?
Right after surgery it is better to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and saunas, as they can increase swelling. Light everyday activity usually begins once the splint and stitches have been removed. Since recovery speed differs from person to person, we confirm the timing while following your progress.
